Smart Search - Smart Search is a program students and parents can use to help with a college search.  It is unique in that it allows you to identify and compare colleges based upon a student's likelihood of admission and eligibility for financial assistance.  It is acced by going to the Warren County School District website and creating an account.

Choices is another college/career program available to the students that helps them identify interests and abilities and find specific college programs that match.  All students are required to complete "Choices" as one of the items on the required graduation project.

Students will soon begin their scheduling of courses for next school year.  They will receive a course selection sheet and course description booklet to take home for your review.  They will be asked to return those as soon as possible in order to enter their 2011/2012 course requests.  Also, Dual Enrollment courses are also available through Clarion University and St. Bonaventure University.  Please call the Guidance Office if you have any questions about course selections.

Attention Seniors

Students can sign up to speak with the College Reps that will be visiting in the Guidance Office.  Below are the Colleges, Dates, and Times the Reps will be here:

Mansfield University - Wednesday, November 16, 2011 @1:00

Students can get a list of programs that these colleges offer in the Guidance Office prior to the visit.

Any Juniors or Seniors who are interested in speaking to any of these college reps, are reminded to sign up in the Guidance Office and get your teacher's permission that period.

Seniors who are interested in attending college or a technical school after high school, should be applying now.  However, it is not too late.  Some specific programs at colleges may have deadlines in order to get accepted. College and career information is available in the Guidance Office. Throughout the school year many college and military representatives visit our school and provide information to interested students.  Students are encouraged to meet with the representatives and gather information.  Parents are encouraged to call the Guidance Counselor, Mr. Steffan, if you need assistance with college admission and financial aid.

The Guidance Office offers the following guidelines for applying to colleges.

  1. Pick colleges that you are interested in.
  2. Obtain a Transcript Request Form (from the Guidance Office or click on the Transcript Request Form link).  Print out and complete the form, have it signed by a parent, and return it with your application.
  3. Obtain college applications for those colleges through the Guidance Office or call the college's Admissions Office from your home.
  4. Complete the application neatly in ink or type - remember to sign it!
  5. If letters of recommendation are required, ask teachers, coaches, and/or counselor - collect and attach to application.
  6. It is the student's responsibility to gather all information: application, letters of recommendation etc.; and bring to the Guidance Office as a packet.  Separating material may hinder the application process.
  7. Put completed application in envelope with check.
  8. Put appropriate number of stamps on envelope.
  9. Bring completed application to your counselor.
  10. Counselor will review the application and send application and official transcript to the college.
  11. If applying on-line, it is your responsibility to notify you counselor that you need an official transcript sent to the school.  A signed Transcript Request Form must be submitted as well.

Seniors and their parents are reminded to complete the financial aid applications (FAFSA). FAFSA is the form used to apply for financial aid to help pay for college. Parents and/or students should not write themselves off by thinking that a post-secondary education is unaffordable. There are various ways a college education can be affordable – through scholarships, grants, and loans.

FAFSA forms are the forms parents and students use to apply for financial aid to help cover the cost of college.  A convenient and faster way to file a FAFSA form is to apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Paper versions can be requested at 1-800-4-FED-AID.  The Guidance Office also usually has FAFSA forms.  By completeing the FAFSA form, students are eligible for federal and state grans that do not have to be repaid.  Completing the form is also required in order to be eligible for student college loans.  The deadline for filing the FAFSA is May 1st.  Many colleges set their own deadlines of when they request to have the form completed which may be earlier.

Scholarships:

Below is a list of scholarships seniors can apply for.  More will be added to the list as the year progresses and they will be included in future parent newsletters.  The Guidance Office updates these on their website and it is accessed by going to the Warren County School District website, then the Sheffield Area Middle/High School link and finally Guidance Office link.
