The Warren County School District recognizes a parent has the primary responsibility for the health of their children. Although the District strongly recommends that medication be given in the home, it realizes that the health of some children requires that they receive medication while in school.

Parents should confer with the child’s physician to arrange medication time intervals to avoid school hours whenever possible. When medication absolutely must be given during school hours, certain procedures must be followed.

For Prescription and Over-the Counter Medications.

  • The physician shall complete the practitioner section of the Student Medication Authorization Form – School Hours.

  • The parent must complete the bottom portion of the Student Medication Authorization Form – School Hours.

  • All medications to be given during school hours must be delivered directly to the school nurse, the school administrator, or assigned designee by the parent or designated adult.

    • Prescription medications must be brought to school in the original pharmaceutically dispensed and properly labeled container.

    • Over-the-counter medications must be brought to school in the original packaging.

  • A medication log will be kept for any child receiving medication during school hours.

  • In the absence of the school nurse, the school administrator or his/her designee will administer the medication; and

  • Students may self-administer inhalers, Epi-pens with Benadryl, and insulin (age appropriate) with appropriate verification only. All other medications will be kept in a locked medicine cabinet.

The WCSD's school physician writes standing orders for Benadryl (only for acute allergic reaction), Cala-gel (anti-itch lotion), Cough Drops, Hydrocortisone Cream, Sting Swabs, Burn Spray, Orajel, Midol, Imodium, Tylenol, Tums, and Triple Antibiotic Ointment. These orders authorize the nurse to administer these medications to a student if there is parental consent. At the beginning of each school year, a Health Services Form is sent home with each student. This form needs completed, medications checked and signed and returned in order for a student to be able to receive any medications.

Please see section titled "FORMS" for the Permission for Medication Administration and Health Services Forms.
