We understand that students and/or their families may have received communications about a proposed Naviance Student Data Privacy Settlement. The purpose of this fact sheet is to summarize information about that case and the steps we undertake to ensure that the technology we use complies with state and federal student data privacy laws.

About Naviance

Since 2002, many U.S. high schools and other K-12 organizations have licensed Naviance software to provide students and their families with college and career planning and assessment tools. According to PowerSchool, which acquired Naviance in 2021, Naviance college and career planning software has supported 25 million college applications in the last four years while serving millions of students nationwide. About the Settlement

In August 2023, a class action lawsuit was filed in court accusing Naviance (and its partners and owners) of inappropriately collecting and sharing student data for commercial purposes. Instead of allowing the court to determine who should win the case and to avoid the uncertainties and expense of litigation, the parties have instead agreed to settle the lawsuit. The proposed settlement – should it be approved by the court later this year - includes significant changes to the data privacy handling practices of PowerSchool’s Naviance and partners, as well as modest monetary compensation to potentially affected individuals. Eligible students and families are being offered the choice of participating in the monetary settlement or opting out of the settlement.
